What’s Your Relationship Like With Your Accountant?
January was quite busy for me. I’ve been accomplishing a lot and I really feel that 2010 is off to a stellar start. I fired my accountant in January. He wasn’t a bad accountant. He was reasonably priced, did his job well, and was a very nice person. Firing him wasn’t easy, because I really like him as a person and I hate to see someone lose income.
In the book, Networking with Millionaires… and Their Advisors, I learned that many millionaires see their accountant as their most important business relationship. After thinking long and hard about it, I realized that I didn’t feel much of a connection between him and I. I am a huge believer in the idea that good relationships, both personal and business, just simply feel right. I also got a sense that I was interrupting him whenever I called him with a question. Finally, I needed someone to be a little bit more proactive about giving me feedback. His company also did my bookkeeping, but he never took the time to look at my reports and give me feedback on any of them.
After many interviews, I found a new accountant and bookkeeper. She won me over for a variety of reasons:
- Her policy is to check in with her clients once a month to see how things are going financially.
- She looked at my business budget with me for an hour and gave me some incredible feedback.
- She wants to meet and discuss my personal financial situation after my 2009 tax return is completed.
- She got real emotional talking about how she wants all of her clients to be debt free.
- She handed me her copy of The Total Money Makeover: A Proven Plan for Financial Fitness
by Dave Ramsey and told me that it was my assignment to read it and we would discuss it.
- She took the time to listen to me.
To top it off, she costs less than my old accountant.
So, I wanted to ask you: What’s your relationship like with your accountant?
Gratitude: I am so grateful that I got hired as a speaker recently.
I Love You Lauren!
jesse….ur ignorant and clearly not on the same financial level we are so you should just go keep pluggin away at the rat race until u try to retire and have to rely of the government…(welfare..which some people call social security or pensions…) have fun with that… and having an accountant is one of the smartest things you could ever do. its not just about filling out forms….its about having knowledge and strength and confidence in your financial power team. Im only 21 and i know that….
you couldn’t POSSIBLY know all the tax rules and special allowances you could be getting unless u are a CPA. thats what they are there for and they are here to help US (people wanting to become millionaires…get there) and if you EVER read any personal finance books….the power of positive thinking will get you a long way…that includes gratitude and grace….which you obviously have NONE of.
Why do you need an accountant in the first place? Are your taxes so difficult you can’t do it yourself? By what you appear to earn, if you pay any more than the $49 it cost to buy TurboTax each year, then you’re paying too much. In fact, I’m going to guess that for someone in your position, you can just fill in the 10 boxes on the 1040-A short form by hand and be done with it – for free.
How much are you paying your accountant for whatever service is being provided? What exactly is the accountant doing for you besides your income taxes?
What is with the daily gratitude BS? Is it a religion-related thing? Or you just saw it on a couple other PF blogs and thought “Hey, I’m going to do that too”?
